Notes: What I always call false Matsutake- all characteristics are the same except for color of cap, flocking on stem and overall odor of sporophores. Formerly Tricholoma Zellerii, this species is known for its cat pee scent.
As you know if you have ever collected them, matsutake smell like the most pleasantly delicate cinnamon, pine and musk with a hint of earthy general mushroom odors.
I feel that some T.focale are more striking and beautiful to look at than the actual sought after matsutake. Flavor and odor, however always trump beauty in the forest kingdom in my experience.
Interestingly, deer and other mammals seem to steer clear of this species, while they all seem to relish the true matsutake, white chanterelles(and all other chanties).
