It’ll be a little while yet, but I’m marking that page.
I kinda feel like I should be able to go back to NCSU and trade my PhD for a good scope! :p

For all the good it’s done me! I think that’d be a good trade.

When the financial resources have been gathered,…

I would like to suggest the place where I bought two of my three microscopes. It is not too far distant from you. It has been a few years since I visited them; I still send repair and cleaning jobs to them and rely on rapid service by courier for things like special bulbs, etc.

as well as a few more have been amazing help. IT’s like having my mycology professor back! Now I just gotta find a microscope so I can do the spore work again. IT’s been a long time !

Although I still propose…

my fair share of mistaken Amanita ID proposals, I feel that my knowledge of the genus has increased at very least tenfold (likely a gross underestimate) as a result of interacting here on MO and utilizing ret’s excellent Amanita Studies website. This internet sharing thing is a total game-changer for mushroom enthusiasts.

E.g. … jury’s still out on this one.

And, having reviewed citrina observations here on MO, I see that some feature caps with lots of UV scales. So I think my concept of citrina could stand a little update. (In the case of this observation I think it’s the type of UV scales that is key.)

Ha!

I’ve had a great time with the folks here. Good teachers all!

now I know why Dr. Goos would always say "I learned these as . . . " any time he was giving you an ID. :)

To give you encouragement…

I have 0.36742 of a broken handle after about 38 years.

You’ll have these little beasts shortly too!
I’m getting Amanita obsessed. HOw am I ever going to get a half a broken handle on these things?

I agree with David regarding placement in sect. Amanita.

The rather large and somewhat elongated bulb seems unusual to me.

Very best,

Rod
