Specimen available

On exposed rocky soil hilltop, slight north-facing slope, with grasses.

Stout podetia with flaring cups. Superficially looks like C. humilis, for which specimens have been collected nearby, but other possibilities exist. Chemistry has not yet been tested.

Has done a bunch of collecting in the area, I’ll track him down at some point in the near future about working on some ID issues in the region.

I’m still confused about C. nashii and C. hammeri

But C. humilis is described as having “farinose” soredia. That’s the fully opposite end of the spectrum from what your photo shows.

The other two occupy that vague intermediate realm of C. chlorophaea with structures somewhere between granular soredia to corticate granules to schizidia. I’m personally interpreting specimens which have any granules as belonging to this group, and reserving C. pyxidata for only those specimens almost entirely devoid of granules. C. pyxidata further often has relatively sparse “appressed squamules” in its cups with ecorticate surface underneath. The C. chlorophaea group, where large compressed corticate granules approaching the appressed squamules of C. pyxidata are present, seems to fill in the gaps between these large granules with more soredioid things. That is, C. chlorophaea has more variation in quality of granules (within a single cup), C. pyxidata seems to be more consistently “appressed-squamulose”.

The descriptions of the species are tough to decipher without having prior experience with what is meant, but C. pyxidata photos look right, and the description of “appressed squamules” in the cups seems to point to this species as opposed to other similar ones. C. pyxidata specimens are reported in the County, but not in the vicinity of this location. C. nashii, C. humilis_, C. hammeri_ are other species with CNALH records in the near vicinity, and also several other species without cups or otherwise very different from this specimen.

This is definitely C. pyxidata. It has pillow-shaped micro-areoles inside the cup and no granules either farinose or coarse or corticate. I looked for any other alternatives, but none exist. I guess C. pyxidata is sometimes just really short.

They’re all P+o/r, so that’s really not so helpful. Some have atranorin, which in principle should make it K+y, but in practice it’s virtually impossible to confidently tell whether it is genuinely K+y before turning dingy red-brown from the fumarprotocetraric acid. If cryptochlorophaea or merohlorophaea were options, then the KC+ red/violet test could be useful… but subtle as well, because strong fumarprotocetraric acid gives me a weak KC+ pinkish reaction. Lastly, UV is supposed to be useful, but again so subtle that it never feels confident.

So I’ve decided to boycott chemistry for this group. ;)

Too short but otherwise looks a lot like C. pyxidata… Do you have any close-up photos of the soredia / granules / microsquamules inside the cups by any chance? I’m curious.
