Notes: Clustered thick-skinned puffballs growing next to sidewalk.


In situ. Near newly planted beech trees (4 months on site).
Only the very top of the sporocarp has broken the soil surface.
Another photo showing the relative size of hypogeous fungi vs. the portion above ground (epigeous).
In hand, spore mass (gleba) is grayish. The peridium is exceedingly thick, and does not stain. Peridium is nearly .5 inch thick at bottom of photo.
