Notes: Rhytisma punctatum grows on Broad Leaf Maple leaves, Acer Macrophyllum, and is able to keep part of the fallen leaf alive so it will continue to produce carbohydrates.

The leaf cells might be, but the tree isn’t. Assuming the leaf is shed first for whatever reason, and then this fungus colonizes the leaf, it’s commensal with the tree species. If the fungus causes the leaf to be shed, it’s parasitic on the tree.

If the leaf cell/fungus complex can reproduce itself independently, including leaf cells, of the original tree, then you might have the beginnings of something lichen-like.

Heh, could one consider this lichenized? After all it seems to be a symbiosis between a fungus and a member of the plant kingdom in which the photobiont is getting something out of it, too. :)
