At the time all I knew was that it was an Amanita, I didn’t realize that it was at all rare since I had only been to the Bay Area for less than a week at that point. Later that evening I identified it, but still had no inkling that it was rare or I would have absolutely saved it.
that stocky stature and chevroned stipe is quite distinctive…but how about that November date, girlfriend??!
and no herbarium specimen? c’mon! no excuse, unless you ate it…they are apparently edible, tho too rare for me to wanna fry ’em…I never munched down on my whooping cranes either, altho I heard that they were delicious, too…;)
I love the way it pushed up that clod of dirt without getting its gills dirty. Those gill edges also look really cool!
