Then its big enough…

Then it could be A. volvata. The size is sufficient, and the flocculence on the upper stipe seems dense enough.

Very best,

I recall the hemishere of universal veil was about the size of a ping-pong ball, so that would put the cap diameter somewhere around four inches. This is the only time I have ever seen an amanita with ‘hat’ like that.

Belongs in Amanita sect. Amidella

This species belongs in Amanita sect. Amidella. If you could tell us a little about the overall size of the mushrooms (cap width?), a guess would be possible; but guesses in this section have at best about 75% probability of being correct…with the exception of A. whetstoneae Tulloss nom. prov. (which this is probably not). Amanita volvata and Amanita pseudovolvata are possibilities. The spore size an dimensions and the form of the lamella trama are useful in terms of the quickest ways to determine a N. American species of sect. Amanita. Geographical location is sometimes useful. In Ohio, the only taxa that can be excluded on geography are undescribed species from the western US and from Mexico, and “A. sagittaria Tulloss nom. prov.” from the Gulf Coast states.

[Look for upcoming expansions of the East Texas and Gulf Coast checklist on the Amanita Studies site.]
