Observation 23284: Amanita Pers.

When: 2009-07-18

Collection location: Wayne National Forest, Athens Co., Ohio, USA [Click for map]

Who: Dan Molter (shroomydan)

No specimen available

Another brownish Amanita under mixed hardwoods. Collected in the same area as the mushroom in OB http://www.mushroomobserver.org/23280. I think they are the same species. Note how the bulb comes to a point at the base.

Maybe in NJ, but not in the ecosystems where I have collected the most…

That bulb and ring of volval material is very distinctive. It’s very consistent from collection to collection. I think I’d remember it. Maybe my memory is not what it used to be?

Very best,

And I suspect in NJ as well. I may not have the right name but I know the mushroom well.

I’m glad your going…

But you have me worried that it will end up being an oddly shaped specimen of something I have seen. Oooh. I should never say I’ve never seen anything like anything before or in any other time continuum.

Getting ready to take my lumps….

I should be writing a thesis, or working on my resume, but for an amanita that Rod has never seen “anything like it anywhere”… I simply must return to the forest to collect a specimen.

It’s the best excuse I can imagine :)

hey Dan, dry the next one!

I don’t remember ever seeing this species, anywhere.
