Observation 24413: Fomes excavatus (Berk.) Cooke
When: 2009-08-16
Collection location: Sumner, Maine, USA [Click for map]
Who: yish
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Its 4in by 4in on top and 3in tall. Its got cork like texture and it weighs 4oz. Feels like cork too. This was chiseled off from a Birch tree. Definitely a mushroom. A numberof them were growing.

I am looking for comments from the community as to what this is or might be.

Fomes fomentarius. It looks like the pore surface may be disruped, maybe when the tree fell over and the pore surace started to grow again trying to reorient.
