and Dan’s comment about the exaggeration of the gill color in the photo, squamulosus looks like a nice guess.

Good luck in all your pursuits Dan. I’ve really enjoyed all of your wonderful mushroom photos.

Dan, I wish you all the best

Thanks for the compliment Debbie. This mushroom was striking. I expected to see pores when I turned it over, but nope, this is a cort. I found it on a dry moss covered ridge top under oak. Orange tones are exaggerated in the gill shot because the photo was taken in the reddish light of the setting sun.

I have the specimen. It’s in my makeshift dryer, in a pile with about fifty other mushrooms I collected last week. I’m in the process of moving this weekend, so I don’t expect to be able to do anything with them in the near future. I’m probably just going to put the entire collection in a single bag and sort them out at some point in the future, after I find a place to live and I get my stuff out of storage.

My lease is up on Tuesday, and I’m not sure where I’m going yet, but I’m leaving Athens to find work. I’ve been hunting mushrooms like it was my job for about a year. It’s been fun, but the mushroom show is going to be over for a while as I deal with the hard realities of rent and bills and finishing my degree so I can make a living teaching philosophy.

I’m writing about the species problem, and interacting with you guys here at MO has been a big help. Maybe this winter, after I find a job a place to live, and after my thesis is defended, I’ll break out some specimens and update these resent obs with microscopy.

reality is such a buzz kill sometimes :_

damn Dude…your shrooms are so cool you should make us pay-per-view!

that’s one cool cort…are the orange colors of the gills “true”? w/out a specimen tho, no further ID progress is probably possible.

perhaps we could take up an MO collection to help pay for a mushroom porter to come along on your walks??! heck, maybe I’ll just volunteer….;)
