Observation 251: Leccinum alaskanum V.L. Wells & Kempton

When: 2002-07-04

Collection location: near Sterling, Alaska, USA [Click for map]

Who: Nathan Wilson (nathan)

No specimen available

Notes:
Identified to genus based on the tight white pores and the scabers on the stalk. It was growing near a road in a spruce forest. We fried up these specimens at a friends home in Anchorage and the flavor was much better than any other Leccinums I’ve ever tried.

July 2007 – Identifed based originally on a photo by Dimitar Bojantchev of a Leccinum he identified on a trip he took to Alaska. His id was based on “North American Boletes” by Bessette, Roody and Bessette. That description appears to be a good match to this observation as well.
