Observation 26213: Fomitopsis pinicola (Sw.) P. Karst.

When: 2009-10-04

Collection location: Larch Mountain, Multnomah Co., Oregon, USA [Click for map]

Who: Daniel B. Wheeler (Tuberale)

No specimen available

A rather large polypore in my experience (note Douglas-fir cone on top for size comparison), about 14 inches across, with bulbous edges growing on a 4-5’ diameter log. Multiple fruiting bodies, all of which had a pleasant, somewhat resinous aroma to them as well as plentiful exudate droplets, especially underneath. Hymenium looks like white shellac.
