This was growing on a hardwood in a small woods in southeastern Ontario. The hardwood was of a species I don’t see much of in the Elgin Street woods I travel to more usually. This woods did contain other more familiar species, including quaking aspen, though.
The mushrooms are attached at a wound, probably the point of infection of the host.
