Observation 27: Tylopilus porphyrosporus (Fr. & Hök) A.H. Sm. & Thiers
When: 2001-11-18
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Seen at the Humboldt Bay Mycological Society mushroom fair.

Aug. 12 – Renamed from Tylopilus pseudoscaber based on Darvin deprecating that name in favor of Tylopilus porphyrosporus. It would be interesting to know more about why.

Bessette etal in North American Boletes does give some addition information,(pages 269-270 under Comments for Tylopilus pseudoscaber). They claim Wolf, Breitenbach and Kranzlin “…have placed Tylopilus pseudoscaber and Tylopilus porphyrosporus in synonomy.” Bessette seems to be favoring T.pseudoscaber.

Tylopilus pseudoscaber is based on Boletus pseudoscaber which is nom. illeg. according to Wolfe.

Wolfe did not accept the name used by Index Fungorum (listed it as a synonym).
Current name: Porphyrellus porphyrosporus (Fr. & Hök) E.-J. Gilbert 1931

Ernst Both lists both as separate species and does NOT give a clear reason why.
