you find them in this stage of development (and you like licorice) try scraping off the outer layer, grinding the remains into fondue, and serving forth. Quite edible but usually too strong for me by itself. Also, you will taste licorice for the next 3 days.

These were all in about the same stage of development. The odor was not particularly strong for any of them.

Were any starting to turn liquid inside?

That’s when they have a strong taste of licorice.
