The citation for thirteen species was :
Harrington FA. (1998). Relationships among Sarcoscypha species: Evidence from molecular and morphological characters. Mycologia 90(2): 235-243.

I wrote that (13 species) before I got my copy of the 10th ed of Dictionary of the Fungi, which says there are “circa 28” species in the genus. Will update shortly.

I also tried to create the name “Sarcoscypha”, but the naming script says that Sarcoscypha has been deprecated in favor of Sarcoscypha sp. Austriaca. I think somebody made a category mistake when they depricated a genus name in favor of a specific name. Wikipedia lists 13 species of Sarcoscypha.

I have found this once in Oct. at Ohiopyle St park in SW Pa.

The site would not let me call it Sarcoscypha species.

I have read somewhere that scarlet cups grow in late falls and survive winter to finally be mature in spring.
