Observation 28561: Tricholoma (Fr.) Staude
When: 2009-10-18
No herbarium specimen

O.K. folks, I’ve seen some oddball stuff, like mushrooms growing on top of other mushrooms, but none quite like this. This one appears to have a mushroom cap growing inversely out of the cap, almost like it was shot out of it.

I suspect this one is Tricholoma odorum as I found quite a few others in this same area this same day. It was found by Lisa S. on a mixed hardwood ridge.

Is this strange, or is just me – anyone see something like this?

y’all seem to know your oddballs alright. Any good reference material that discusses this? I Googled and found references in Shroomotopia, Shroomery & Sacredshrooms, but couldn’t come up with images or good definition/explanation.
Thanks! – now MutantMOFunGuy
