Observation 2911: Leucopaxillus paradoxus (Costantin & L.M. Dufour) Boursier
When: 2007-01-05
No herbarium specimen

Notes: The photos don’t really do this one justice – This mushroom was huge, at least a foot across.

Smelled kind of bad, which confirmed the ID.

Used references: The dust hasn’t fully settled on this, and I’m still gathering my list of references, but there’s some question as to whether the basionym Agaricus albissimus Peck is validly published. Current thinking is that Agaricus cerealis Lasch. takes precedence in Europe, and North American species are divided between L. paradoxus (Costantin & L.M. Dufour) Boursier (1925) on conifer duff, and L. laterarius (Peck) Singer and A. H. Smith.
