Hi Phil, Amanita amerimuscaria nom. prov. is a synonym of A. muscaria subsp. flavivolvata.

Through DNA testing its been observed that the red form of A. muscaria subsp. muscaria does not occur in the United States.

It turns out that the wart color is not a fool proof species indicator.

I suggest we don’t use the provisional name A. amerimuscaria until its actually published and accepted by the scientific community, there is still quite a bit we don’t know and there are likely to be multiple new species on both sides of the continent.

I hope that explains it, thanks for asking a great question!

I thought we were calling these Amanita amerimuscaria now.According to mykoweb
A.flavivolvata, with a red cap and yellowish warts
The warts did not seem yellow to me.
Perhaps Herbert you could explain.
