Observation: Hydnellum peckii Banker (314)

When: 1994-01-15
Collection location: Big Basin State Park, Santa Cruz Co., California, USA [Click for map]
Who: Nathan Wilson (nathan)
No herbarium specimen

Notes: The date is only accurate to the month.

Identified by sight initially. Further reading revealed the sister species H. ferrugineum. They can be separated by taste. H. peckii is acrid and H. ferrugineum is mild. When I returned to the area where I took this picture another year, I found another mushroom similar to this one which I tasted. It was amazingly acrid.
