The two purple Ascocoryne species discussed in Ascomycete books are A. sarcoides and A. cylichnium. They could be distinguished by the sizes of their spores (A. sarcoides: 12-18 × 3-6 microns; A. cylichnium 18-33 × 4-6 microns) and/ or by their paraphyses may also be different. Macroscopically it’s a guessing game.
