Recognized by sight: Growing in western North America; brown cap; yellow volval remnants and partial veil; fits description of what was formerly known as Amanita franchetii sensu Thiers; shows the reddish tones that develop on the stipe.

the brilliant yellow cap (online mushroom websites please take note!).
dark brown and combinations of yellow and brown are also possible cap colors.

the bits of bright yellow veil remnants along the stipe, which is slightly expanded at the base, but never cupped.

the red staining on the bulb. this amanita is after all in section validae with the other blushing amanitas, like novinupta in the west and rubescens in the east.
