My second attempt at using the 100x oil immersion objective, it’s not easy and will take a lot of practice to be able to make thin enough sections to view cystidia and other larger cells!

I’m hoping someone might recognize some of these micro characters and maybe we can get closer to a more definitive identification for this interesting collection.

The red staining fades to brown with the drying of the specimens and the lamellae even if not stained by damage dries to the same brown pigment!

The neck on the pileocystidia can reach a maximum length of 83µm although I didn’t capture a good image of one of these longer necked examples.

I’m glad you mentioned Cystolepiota, these specimens have the same odor as the Cystolepiota species in this observation.

may not be the only option. Bruising red, with cystidious cap and stem, I think Lepiota or Cystolepiota are possible genera as well.

One doesn’t ordinarily use oil immersion for a measly 100x magnification, but it’s common for 1000×.

the 10x eyepiece lens combined with the 100x objective lens gives 1000x magnification.

Probably not – the eyepiece is usually 10x, so multiplied by the 100x obj. yields 1 grand.

The staining reaction occurs within one minute after damage, I’m quite certain it is a Leucoagaricus species but which one?
I’ll dry some and examine them when I get my 100x oil immersion objective next week.

You’re not kidding – that is an intensely red bruise.

Maybe closer to Leucoagaricus? I don’t know if red staining is a common feature for Leucocoprinus.

Yes, it’s a Hohenbuehelia species in the background!
These are in a potted Spathiphyllum species indoors that Leucocoprinus birnbaumii was found in about two years ago, all parts of the fruit body quickly stain a vivid red pigment with damage, it also has a strong odor that I’m unable to describe.
