Observation 34992: Rhopalogaster transversarium
When: 2008-02-03
No herbarium specimen

Notes: Observed this and other specimens growing among pines, which is why I identify it as C. americanus rather than pistillaris.

other than in 2008, here on MO, here’s the only other online photo that I could locate, a winner of the NJMS 2009 photo contest: http://www.njmyco.org/

and closer to home, it even keys out in Arora’s MDM!

good luck finding it again!

Unfortunately, I have recently moved to Missouri…now I’m really intrigued. Wish I could collect a specimen. However, they should still be there, I saw these mushrooms two years in a row.

do you live in the area?

can you find it again? this looks really different…

the general shape looks like a Podostroma, the outer skin has scales and reddens, the inside looks gastroid, and the distorted gills are colored like those of a bolete!
