I see some boletes that crack like that… Emerging from the ground they look deceptively like certain hypogeous fungi. Not sure I would call it anything more than Fungi sp. without a photo of the hymenium.

As far as I know Scleroderma species are always gastroid (puffball-like). This picture looks like it has a regular hymenium and stipe rather than a gleba, but I’d have to see a picture of the underside to be sure.
