I was just guessing based on their appearance that they were exposed. Beats me, then. I never did learn the difference between those two species…

these were tucked deep in a tangle of manzanita branches and were in fact quite sheltered. other than the sun shade, I wouldn’t call it a humid habitat, tho…

Maybe C. macilenta. Is that the one out west? Highly doubt C. umbricola given exposed location.
