Thought maybe old slimemold at first, but no trace of plasmodium. These look old. Definitely not a lichen. Growing on a dead birch.

Used references: Looked like the thing in this photo on Discover Life, however Steve Stevenson disagrees strongly: "My general impression of the “things” in the image is that they are the synnemata of an imperfect fungus and not a myxo at all….certainly not Cribraria vulgaris."
