Found on edge of dirt road in mixed hardwood forest.
When fresh (not photographed), the cap was fairly dark, more a chocolate brown. It dried out a bit to this color when getting home, since it is hygrophanous from the margin. The darkened disc here was a constant color to the margin when fresh. Also there were veil fragments on the margin, which didn’t survive the trip home.
The first micro-shot is of the gill edge at 400x in Meltzer’s. Here there are lageniform cheilocystidia, with blunt to subcapitate apecies on a non-fertile edge. The gill face was lacking pleurocystidia, and the basidia were separated by spacer cells. The basidia were 4-spored, and the spore had no reactions to the Meltzer’s.
The second micro-shot is of the cap surface in radial section at 400x in Meltzer’s. Here the surface is hymeniform, with no gelatin or pileocystidia.
The third micro-shot is of the stipe surface near the apex at 400x in KOH. There are caulocystidia which are cylindrical, some are subcapitate. No caulocystidia were obs. at the stipe base.
The fourth micro-shot is of spores from the stipe apex at 1000x in KOH. The spores are smooth, ellipsoid, yellow-tan, with no clear germ pore. The average spore size was: length – 7.24 +/- 0.47 (err 0.14) um, width – 4.16 +/- 0.28 um (err: 0.10) – q : 1.74 +/- 0.10, on 13 spores.
The main fact here turns out to be the lack of a germ pore on the spores. Well, with the hymeniform cap, and lageniform cheilocystidia, this is a Pholiotina. And lacking a germ pore in the spores, that pretty much gets you P. aporos. The other microscopic details also matched well with the species description. It was noted that this is a spring-time Pholiotina, so that fits also.
