Observation 44476: Verpa bohemica (Krombh.) J. Schröt.

When: 2010-04-19

Collection location: Geneva, Switzerland [Click for map]

Who: Douglas Smith (douglas)

No specimen available

Notes:
Found and id’ed by others at the SMG.

Quicky put some of the fertile surface under the scope there. It turns out this one has a nifty unique feature, the asci only produce 2 spores. Which I didn’t believe was true, so we put it under the scope and what do you know… there it is.

The micro-shot of ascis at 1000×. Here you can see the two spores per asci.

Sorry about the color, the blues are an artifact of the white balance, light color and corrections. I don’t have experience with this scope, so my “normal” use that I do with my home scope produce slightly screwed up colors. The color here is not a reaction with any reagent.
