Observation 44688: Non-fungal
When: 2010-01-09
No herbarium specimen

Notes: I discovered this stange structure on a tree trunk in one of our coastal reserves.
At first I thought it was some kind of nest, but as can be seen from the posted images it leaves a question as to what it really is. I broke the body open to investigate more closely, but was still left wondering. The size of the case (for a better word) was about 3/4" or 2cm, and was structually sound and needed some force to open the weave. I could not detect any life or movement once the structure was opened. It was a singular object.

Must agree with you Darvin. I was hoping someone might come to the rescue with the designer of the mystery case.. It appeared to be vacated? but whole.

Insect?

I would guess animal, not fungal.
