Kind of looks like a head of butternut lettuce when cut through the center: loose leaves of material. When you are sure of where the base was. Often covered in loose, felt-like hairs which strongly adhere to soil and duff layer, as shown in the photos. At lower elevations and more Northern latitudes, felty covering less obvious, sometimes nearly disappearing.
