Observation 46191: Polyporus squamosus (Huds.) Fr.
When: 2010-06-02
No herbarium specimen

Notes: I found this mushroom growing on what appeared to be a standing dead Cottonwood tree (Populus balsamifera). It was about 10 inches across the cap. The best fit I’ve seen seems to be Polyporus squamosus, but from what I’ve seen, its distribution in North America is east of the Rockies. Also, the pores seem different to me than in any other pictures I’ve found, though perhaps it’s within normal variation?

I should add that I did collect it, and assuming it keeps until she returns, a friend of mine will look at it more closely and try to key it out.
