Observation 46339: Meripilus sumstinei (Murrill) M.J. Larsen & Lombard
When: 2010-06-06
Herbarium specimen reported

I collected about 3 pounds of this, it smells and grows like all the other hen of the woods I have found but I have never seen one with so much black in it. It smells fine, is not rotten. I am assuming this is the hen of the woods because I always find them in the area I found this one in.

Better safe than sorry.

The other hens I have found were more of a grayish/buff color.

Thanks for the ID, I am now going to try these guys out, they smell delicious.

I had a feeling they were not hens.
