Found at side of rt. 120, on way to Tioga pass

Location: lat 37.777 long -119.749
Elevation: 6800

Found on conifer branch, buried under edge of snow bank, found completely covered in snow.

Asco discs close to branch, no clear stipe, although attached to branch in center of each disc.

and scoped something just like this, but it never made it into an observation. I think it was a Sierra Nevada Field Campus find. Those characteristic black petals embedded beneath a deep orange, semi-gelatinous apothecium were an instant memory jogger. The asco volume of the Swiss series will have more to say on Cenangium, and perhaps other similar genera.

something in the Rhytismatales group, those who are covered with a dark crust when they are immature (or dry)?
