Recognized by sight: According to Field Guide to North American Truffles, this is found throughout North America. However, I have not collected in your area and cannot be certain. When mature this should have a pinkish- or purplish-tint to the inside of the gleba. Often found erumpent (partially above ground) with only the opening in the top visible, but I have also seen it nearly completely above ground on rare occasions. Often found near pine, true fir, Douglas-fir, and sometimes hemlock, at least in my area.
