Nathan, the argument for calling it Boletus eastwoodiae is very convincing, however I am going to keep calling this Boletus satanas for as long as I can get away with it.

Douglas, there really aren’t many mushrooms out around Monte Bello, B. satanas is the only big fleshy one I saw. It was growing under live oak on canyon trail, maybe half way between page mill and bella vista trail. I saw specimens on both the left and the right and I left at least one nice one for you on the right, just barely off the road.
