This is not an easy genus to work with in the keys because features vary and overlap between different species. They vary from resupinate to hard woody conks. The monograph by Larsen & Cobb-Poulle lists 221 species and varieties of Phellinus. Gilbertson & Ryvarden narrows the list to 48 species in North America. A few species have a restricted host and a few are generalists, so the genus of the tree is important info to get. Microscopically the key features are dimitic, presence of a setae in the trama &/or hymnium and the shape of the spores.

what distinguishes this polypore?
