Observation 47460: Anzia ornata (Zahlbr.) Asahina

When: 2010-04-17

Collection location: near Chinnabee Lake, Clay Co., Alabama, USA [Click for map]

Who: Jason Hollinger (jason)

Specimen available

Vitaly Charny sent me this among a bunch of lichens to verify identifications of. This is apparently quite rare, with very few reports. (Culberon calls it “extremely rare” in his monograph, “A second Anzia in North America”.)

The genus is readily identifiable by the weird black spongy layer underneath; the species is readily identifiable by the coarse isidioid soredia along the upturned margins.
