Observation 47622: Leccinum Gray

When: 2010-06-24

Collection location: Forest near Elgin St., Pembroke, Ontario, Canada [Click for map]

Who: Paul Derbyshire (Twizzler)

No specimen available

This sizable bolete was growing in Zone 02 in sandy ground close to several tree species, including Acer sp., Betula papyrifera, and Pinus resinosa.

It wasn’t in the best of condition. Stipe with sand stuck to it, black mushy-looking pore mass, slugs all over, perhaps beginning to rot underneath though no especially strong odor.

Still, it’s the most spectacular fleshy ground mushroom find here so far this year, thanks to some substantial rains we finally got June 22-23.
