Observation 47944: Lecanora muralis (Schreber) Rabenh.

When: 2010-05-20

Collection location: Cibola National Forest, New Mexico, USA [Click for map]

Who: Jason Hollinger (jason)

Specimen available

on exposed sandy soil

I thought this was Squamarina lentigera but in the end was forced to conclude that they were simply unusual terricolous specimens of L. muralis (which was growing quite abundantly on nearby sandstone outcrops). (Note the jagged / interrupted algal layer under the apothecia in the microscopic photos — this is typical for L. muralis but not Squamarina.)
