Notes: This was the most abundant soil crust in the area. The diagnostic “rhizines” are quite difficult to find. It does help to wet the sample first then very gently remove a squamule. (The otherwise identical species, P. squamulosum, has no rhizines among the weft of hyphae below the squamules.)
