I would have liked to call it Sarcodon “modestum” (smell sort of farinaceous, taste mild, but sometimes slightly bitter..?). The trouble is that no such name exists. It was described from Wisconsin (I think) as Hydnum modestum (1962), and from what I’ve read lately, it’s very likely to be the same species as the true Sarcodon glaucopus, which was originally described (1969) from a rich spruce forest in Sweden (if that is true, it means that what we have called glaucopus from pine woods is something else, without a name. Sigh…).

I assume by observation that is most likely mycorhizaly attached to the spruce.
I don’t particularly remember any strong odor, (I was not having and easy time getting a definite ID on this one thanks for the ideas) and yes it was soft enough to cut through and to make me think that it would be edible
With dark bluish/greenish in the stem base, it reduces the amount of species to choose from. Notes on taste and smell is essential to narrow it down further. Habitat is important too.
It reminds a bit of something we had a provisional name on (“modestum”) in Scandinavia.. a species close to glaucopus and scabrosus, but growing with spruce.
