Observation 4937: Psilocybe corneipes (Fr.) P. Karst
When: 2007-11-13
No herbarium specimen

Notes: tiny mushroom scattered in moist bed of “dry” pond in mixed forest
ST: 25-30×1mm, golden at top to rich reddish brown below, smooth, dry, flexible and soft but unbreaking, fuzz at base, not straight
FLESH: minute, fragile, dingy
CAP: 10-20mm wide, convex to plane, golden/orangy brown to deep brown, hygrophanous (fading buff), translucent striate when mature, smooth, dry
GILLS: notched, pale yellow-orange turning brown
SPORE: print dark brown

Because of the dark spore print, I considered Psathyrella, Panaeolus, Naematoloma, Stropharia, and Psilocybe (and allies). The N. dispersum group is a possibility, but the (brief) description of Psilocybe corneipes in Demystified seems a good fit (dull orange-brown and inhabits wet areas).
