Thiers’ white mushroom from California …

mostly (if not entirely) corresponds to white specimens of Amanita velosa. You might be more likely to have the entity that eastern North American mycologists have called “Amanita vaginata var. alba”…which does not belong to that European taxon. I’m not sure how many white Vaginatae there may be in eastern North America, but at least one is occasionally found. I have a feeling that there has been a discussion of it on MO in the past. Let me check….

Added later: Yup. See observation 46344. The provisional name is Amanita rasitabula (“the Blank Slate Ringless Amanita”).
