Options on the table…

I would say that these are the options that I can think of at the moment:

A. frostiana
A. muscaria var. guessowii
A. flavoconia

Of these three options (amanitas that often have orange caps and yellow volval material…at least when rather young), frostiana is undoubtedly generally the rarest. At this time of year, flavoconia is one of the most common amanitas. In photographs of whole mushrooms, the bulb is one of the most valuable features for separating these three taxa because of the bulb’s shape and the differences in the patterns of volval remnants on the bulb and lower stem in the three taxa.

Somebody will bring up muscaria var. persicina perhaps; however, when one is only using photographs, the bulb and the volva are very important to making a likely guess about identity in the case of persicina as in the other cases.

Since you’re not in Connecticut any longer, I think we should say that the specimen is very likely to be an amanita, but we really can’t get to definitive about it might be more specifically.

Very best,

Rod

Unfortunately, I’m no longer in Connecticut…

I should never assume that an Amanita is an easy ID – could this be something other than muscaria, or do you just think it’s not guessowii?

Thanks.

Can you get a picture of the bulb?
