Observation 50010: Solorina spongiosa (Ach.) Anzi

When: 2009-06-24

Collection location: Mount Stearn, Willmore Wilderness, Alberta, Canada [Click for map]

Who: Jason Hollinger (jason)

Specimen available

Notes:
on mossy alpine slope

This is an unusual lichen in that the green-algal primary thallus has been reduced to a vestigial ring around the apothecia. Most of the thallus is composed of a semi-continuous mass of cyanobacterial cephalodia. Not very beautiful, but scientifically interesting.
