Observation 50516: Bovista pila Berk. & M.A. Curtis
When: 2010-08-12
No herbarium specimen

Notes: These 3 puffballs were all near each other in dirt near grass. They had a thin white outer skin and the larger one had the remnants of that white skin and an also thin but tough brown skin. The spoor mass inside was gooey brown and did not seem to have any vestigial stem and resembled the grains of sand/chambers described in MD. Also tried keying to sclerodoma and lycoperdon but dead-ended on those.

MD p. 679 2 – 4 – 5 – 6 – 7 – 8 – 10 => Bovista & Disciseda p. 696
MD p. 696 1-2-3-5-6-7 – 8 – 9 = Bovista pila.
