Used references: Phillips has a better cross section of these black clubs than B/B/F. I’m surprised that B/B/F doesn’t mention “similar species” under their T. farlowii comments.

that’s why I didn’t take down my initial T proposal.

I admit that ID by picture + “guesstalt” is going to lead one into the occasional wrong direction.

I voted “low rank”

because is immaterial what epithet you choose (difforme, in this case) before you know the genus to which your specimen belongs. Clearly, it can be G. difforme as well as some dozens of other species, some of the genus Trichoglossum.

with me when we brought these in, I’d have encountered three different species of black tongue on one page. Looks like spore size may be a way to seperate T from G… and I had access to a scope! So we can’t say for sure. But, I’m intrigued as to why someone voted “G. difforme” a low rank.

Thanks zaca for the references.

Geoglossum or Trichoglossum ?

First of all you have to decide which of the genera it is. Maybe a couple of references can be useful:

the shiny black color, elongated shape, and longitudinal compression of fruit bodies appears to make this Geoglossum difforme! After one quick check in B/B/F I had thought…. “how many thin black clubs can there be?”

Thanks darv.
