Observation 51272: Simocybe centunculus (Fr.) P. Karst.
When: 2010-08-22
Collection location: Thoiry, France [Click for map]
Herbarium specimen reported

Notes: Found under spruce and fir. Uncertain spore color, but they had the odor of geraniums, or maybe tomato stems (not the tomatoes).

Adding some micro-details:

The first micro-shot is of the gill edge at 400x in Meltzer’s. The cheilocystidia are cylindrical, straight to wavy, with blunt ends, some slightly inflated. No pleurocystidia were obs. No reactions to Meltzer’s in tissues or spores.

The second micro-shot is of spores from the gill at 1000x in Meltzer’s. The spores are ellipsoid, smooth, with no germ pore. The apr. size is 6 × 4 um.

The details match pretty well with Simocybe centunculus, so it isn’t that much of a surprise. Not sure where the geranium odor was coming from…

The colors in the photos are about right, the guys didn’t get much of a chance to dry out. They def. had an olive-green thing going on.

Not sure if there is a microscope at CERN. I haven’t seen any there yet, not sure what they would be using a microscope for at CERN really…

Hmmm…

was the yellow-green color (third photo) apparent only after it had been picked, or as it dried out?
Can you tell us anything about the spore shape?
I bet CERN has a microscope SOMEWHERE
