The top of the stipe in very young material is not densely flocculent – eliminates volvata.

There is no sign of an annulus in very young material – probably eliminates peckiana.

The cap margin is not striate at at time post eruption of the cap from the volva – probably not pseudovolvata

The saccate volva is not large and bag like – probably not whetstoneae

What’s left among the most common eastern North American taxa is A. dolichopus.
